The "Pawsative" Approach to Dog Training
If you want a well-trained dog or puppy that will obey your commands the first time you give them, it is very important to use positive motivation to condition your dog's mind that your commands are good and associate your commands with pleasant results. This is especially important if you want an off-leash obedient dog. If you use harsh corrective methods, you will have a dog that will obey out of fear and compulsion, and if your dog feels he/she can get away from you or ignore you, they will. By the use of positive motivation, you will create a strong loving bond between you and your dog and will have a dog that will want to please you. There may be times during the training process that your dog is distracted when you give a command and does not respond. If that happens, only say the command once and then gently make it happen to ensure your dog understands that you will not let them ignore you. Over time, you will have a reliably obedient dog that is happy to obey your commands.

Adjusting to Life with a New Puppy ![]() We know how important the first few months of a puppy's life are in the development of a happy, confident, well-adjusted dog. The socialization process should continue for at least the first year of the dog’s life, and we will help you every step of the way. If you ever have any questions, please call us at 465-1878. We have included some tips to help you and your new puppy adjust to your home. 1. The first night or two will be hard for the puppy, so it is best to put the puppy in a box or sky kennel by your bed so you can reassure the puppy that the new home will be all right. This will also help the puppy bond to you. (Please don’t let the puppy sleep in the same bed with you, as this can create some respect problems later on.) 2. Crate training is the best method for potty training. 3. Provide 2 or 3 chew toys; Nylabone, Kongs, and ropes work well. Please don’t give your puppy rawhide, pig ears, or hooves, as they are health risks and can be very dangerous for dogs. 4. Most importantly, love your puppy but don’t let the puppy rule the household. We will be happy to help or answer any questions you come up with. We will go over all of these items and more in depth in our puppy preschool classes. written by Greg Tank, Certified Master Dog Trainer, copyright 2007 2007-08-07 01:59:09 GMTComments: 0 |Permanent Link
