Adjusting to Life with a New Puppy ![]() We know how important the first few months of a puppy's life are in the development of a happy, confident, well-adjusted dog. The socialization process should continue for at least the first year of the dog’s life, and we will help you every step of the way. If you ever have any questions, please call us at 465-1878. We have included some tips to help you and your new puppy adjust to your home. 1. The first night or two will be hard for the puppy, so it is best to put the puppy in a box or sky kennel by your bed so you can reassure the puppy that the new home will be all right. This will also help the puppy bond to you. (Please don’t let the puppy sleep in the same bed with you, as this can create some respect problems later on.) 2. Crate training is the best method for potty training. 3. Provide 2 or 3 chew toys; Nylabone, Kongs, and ropes work well. Please don’t give your puppy rawhide, pig ears, or hooves, as they are health risks and can be very dangerous for dogs. 4. Most importantly, love your puppy but don’t let the puppy rule the household. We will be happy to help or answer any questions you come up with. We will go over all of these items and more in depth in our puppy preschool classes. written by Greg Tank, Certified Master Dog Trainer, copyright 2007 2007-08-07 01:59:09 GMT
